Light, before and after the darkness.

Palm Sunday has always struck me as a delightful and fun day. I can so easily get caught up in the expectation and the joy of the people of Jerusalem as Jesus enters the city.

I can see and hear the children as they run to meet him. This great teacher, this man who is God, Jesus who has given us so many signs and such wonderful love.

The noise, the smells, the hands held high waving palm branches crying out ‘Hosanna in the highest!’

But in the midst of that joy there is a deep darkness. It is harder for us to experience fully the joy of the people of Jerusalem because know the story, we know what comes next.

We know the agony that awaits Jesus and his disciples.

We know the darkness of the garden at Gethsemane (where we will join the Disciples in their Watch on Maundy Thursday).

We know the pain of the arrest and His condemnation. His struggle to carry the cross, His falls, the reversal of the joy of the crowds to jeers, hatred and spittle.

Palm Sunday marks the start of that journey of darkness.

It also, and this is the vital part of the story, marks the start of the journey towards the light.

We KNOW that Jesus will come again, that He will rise three days later, that He will save us all – and in that joy we share a large part.

This week, accept and see the darkness… then let the light destroy it utterly.

Orders of service for each of the Holy Week services (including Palm Sunday) will be uploaded and available for download from the Holy Week Service page.

On Palm Sunday children are invited to come and help build the Easter Garden in the Lady Chapel. It’ll be a hands-on activity where we re-create the garden of gethsemane, calvary and the tomb. The garden will form the centre piece of the altar of repose over Easter.

During Holy Week there will be a Priest available for confessions for an hour before each mass. Make your way to the statue of Jesus and the Priest will hear your confession or will help you make your first confession.

Don’t be late for mass this week! We start at 10am outside church and bless the palms, before processing to the altar.

Susan and Fr. Josiah are advancing plans for a new Sunday afternoon children’s service and club – 4pm to 6pm on the last Sunday of each month. The first service will be on the 30th April. If you’d like to be involved, please speak to Fr. Josiah.

    The Helper,  the Paraclete.

Next Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost – the coming of the Holy Spirit. On Thursday we said goodbye to the earthly presence of Jesus as He ascended to His Father.

Jesus told us that He is sending us a helper – The Helper, called The Paraclete in some translations.

The Paraclete in the ancient Rome tradition was someone who was sent into a difficult situation to help. Sometimes they’re described in much the same way as a lawyer – but the reality was rather more complex and interesting.

When a soldier was accused of doing something wrong or was in any sort of trouble or strife the Paraclete was sent in to help.

Sometimes that would mean advocating on behalf of the soldier, or it may mean giving advice, or perhaps pointing them in the right direction when they may not be able to see the path in front of them.

That’s one of my favourite ways to think about the Holy Spirit – that when I’m in trouble (and perhaps I don’t even know I’m in trouble) the Holy Spirit will speak to me, advocate for me, give me advice and point me in the right direction.

Now, I may not like that advice, but the important thing is that I listen to it. Because when we’re in trouble, when we’re walking the wrong path or we’re in a spot of bother The Paraclete is there to give us some clarity and only has our best interests at heart.

We would be foolish not to listen to the advice of The Holy Spirit.

So spend this week listening and being open to what the Holy Spirit is saying to you in this moment.

Thank you very much for Fr. Leslie who is covering Parish Mass for us whilst Fr. Matthew is away with his family on half term break. Please do pray for Fr. Leslie and give him the usual St. Anselm welcome!

There will be a bring and share lunch after the Pentecost service next Sunday – come to mass wearing red and be prepared for a great party afterwards.

We are lucky enough that five people have volunteered to be leaders for our summer holiday club. We’re now looking for people who can commit to a few hours to help with things like making tea & coffee, tidying up at the end of each day and other assisting tasks. Please speak to Fr. Matthew or Julie Estep (Sunday School Leader).

I’m still looking for volunteers for the 12th July to meet with  Priests applying for our new Mission Priest job (interviews with +Jonathan on the 13th July). If you’d like to meet the applicants or help with showing them around the parish please be in touch.

  • News for Easter 2022

He is not here; He has risen!

The empty tomb stands as a symbol of the greatest Hope and the greatest story ever told.

Of a man who came to earth, was crucified, died, buried, descended into hell, and on the third day rose again!

He came to take away our sin, to bring us into a new life in God.

So as we start this journey together on Thursday evening, as darkness descends and altars are stripped. We must remember that darkness will never win, that it will always be cast out by the light.

    The light will always win.

What an huge treat is will be to have Anthony back with us for Easter Sunday! Make sure you come along at 10am on Sunday morning to once again hear our organ play out loud with some wonderful hymns!
