    Starting BB and Girls’ Association

Each week we work with over 750 Churches and over 20,000 children and young people aged 5 to 18 years across the United Kingdom & Republic of Ireland. We could help your Church reach out to children and young people in your community by starting a group.

Since 1883, The Boys’ Brigade has reached out to millions of children and young people. Today we are passionate about partnering with Churches to build bridges into local communities and engage a generation of children and young people with a message of hope rooted in Jesus. Our Vision is that children and young people experience “life to the full” (John 10:10).

Through the BB children and young people (aged 5 to 18+) get involved in local Churches by means of weekly groups, residentials, special events, community projects and training programmes. These activities are led by thousands of volunteers who are trained and supported to work as effective children’s and youth workers in a Christian context. Whilst our work is in the UK & RoI, we are part of a worldwide organisation set up and run to reach over one million children and young people.

In 1995, 613,000 young people aged 10 to 19 were attending Church, but by 2005 this figure had dropped to 230,000. That’s a drop of 62%. Recent research also shows that 59% of Churches have no one attending between 15 and 19 years of age.

Over recent years Churches have experienced increasing difficulties getting young people through their doors. Each week The Boys’ Brigade works with thousands of children and young people, and for many of them The Boys’ Brigade is their only connection with the Church.

“8 years ago a lad was playing football outside the Church. He came in and had a great time. About 3 years ago he gave his life to Jesus. Since then, his brother and his mum have both come into the Church as well.”

The Boys’ Brigade has a track record. It has a recognisable name as a safe place that parents can trust. By partnering with your Church we can help you reach out to children and young people not only in your Church but in your local community.

We want to be your partner in outreach. Therefore as an organisation we are flexible to the needs of your Church. The Boys’ Brigade belongs to the Church, and we hope that what happens during the week will be seen as just as important as what happens at the weekend!

    Bring The Children

Jesus quickly said in Matthew 19:14, when his disciples prevented the children from coming to Jesus so that he may lay his hands on them and pray for them, “…but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” My parents enrolled me in the Boys’ Brigade when I was ten, and this group helped shape my life in my Christian journey. The object of the Boys’ Brigade is very ambitious, and I dare say that the group has never departed from it. The advancement of Christ’s kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.” The Girls also have what they call “The Aim”, and it’s very forthright: To help girls to become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility, to find true enrichment of life.”

Indeed, we all want our children to exhibit these traits and be able to influence other children, which will go a long way to make our society a better place devoid of all anti-social

    behaviours we see around us.

God wants the children to come to him unhindered, and the little we can do as Christians, parents, grandparents, family friends, etc., is to introduce the children to these Christian groups, get them occupied with the things of God and get their steps ordered in the Lord. “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”(Proverbs 22:6). This group will be a great support to children as they grow because a child trained in the house of God can influence his peers to come along and experience the love of Christ.

We have had two meetings with leaders of the Brigade in West London, and they are very willing to support us in establishing one in St. Anselm Church. Let us tell people about it, take some fliers and distribute them to parents and children you come across, and be an agent of evangelism. The children are the definition of the future.

    Readings for 30th June

    https://universalis.com/20240630/mass.htm

  • Mission Priest for Hayes

Applications for this post are now closed, thank you for your interest. Please do pray for us as we discern the right candidate and interview in July.

The parish has passed a Resolution under the House of Bishops Declaration.

Hayes is growing at an enormous rate – and so are the opportunities to engage with people who have never known Jesus. This exciting new role will be at the heart of our ambitious vision to be the beating heart and lived out love of Christ in Hayes.

    Main Responsibilities

    • Lead and develop a team of lay leaders on the estates of Hayes who will be comfortable and able to lead others to Christ.
    • Chair the Mission committee at St. Anselm.
    • Be a key part of delivering the St. Anselm Five Year Vision.
    • Be responsible for growing communities in personal and communal spaces (homes, offices and coffee shops etc).
    • Be a visible presence on the estates, especially the area known as the Red Brick Estate.
    • Develop new relationships with non-church of England primary schools and secondary schools that serve Hayes.
    • Offer pastoral care to the parish, including visiting, home communions etc.
    • Use modern communication tools to engage with new communities

    The Ideal Candidate

    • Passionate about re-engaging with those who have lost their faith.
    • Enthusiastic about mission to the unchurched.
    • Someone who wants to spend as much time out of the church as they do inside it.
    • Comfortable in the roughest of pubs and the nicest of restaurants.
    • Comfortable meeting in people’s homes and businesses.
    • Willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck into anything that is thrown at them.
    • Open to the inspiration and leading of the Holy Spirit at work in Hayes.

    About us

St. Anselm was opened in 1929 at the heart of what was then a village rapidly turning into an industrial town. The rapid growth in the latter part of the 19th century prompted the Diocese of London to plant a new church (initially in a hut before the current church was built) in the midst of Hayes Town – centred on the canal and railway into London.

There was an explosion of house building and many people saw Hayes as a new suburb of London. Hayes though retained its own character and identity as the railway served industry rather than passengers into Paddington. The housing was bought by people working at EMI, Nestlé and other large industrial companies supplying vital materials for the inter-war expansion of London and its suburbs.

Hayes is once again at the centre of an exciting period of change, with factories being replaced by high density housing for people moving to the area, attracted by the new Crossrail station, this time ferrying passengers rather than cargo. This huge increase in housing marks a new phase of opportunity for St. Anselm, and almost a 100 years after it was opened it finds itself once again at the heart of mission in the Diocese of London

    St Luke the Evangelist.

It is fair to say that since I arrived in Hayes I have preached consistently on two things.

Firstly, our love for one another – given to us through Jesus Christ – which makes us a family beyond any earthly understanding.

Secondly, that that love is so great and so life-changing that we can do nothing except share it with the world.

St. Luke the Evangelist is ascribed with being the author of both Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. He’s mentioned several times in scripture – most notably perhaps in Colossians where he is referred to as a physician.

It’s thought that whilst he wasn’t a personal witness to Jesus Christ he was part of the great 70 who were sent out – and certainly that he was an eyewitness and participant of the great evangelisation of the world started in the Acts of the Apostles.

He is considered to be the first icon painter – his icon our Our Lady and Jesus is still the model of the image we have of her and the baby Jesus today.

Whatever the truth of the details of his life it is clear that he found a faith in Jesus Christ and then shaped his entire life around it.

He went out into the world and did everything in his power to bring people to know and love Jesus Christ.

He used whatever tools he had to hand to do that – icons, the written word – gifts given him by God that he then deployed in the world for the good of all mankind.

It prompts us to consider what part we play in the great evangelisation of the world, what gift we bring to that work and what we can do to help bring people to Jesus.

    Other news

It’s our last choir practice before the new choir sings the Anthem next Sunday. Don’t worry if you’ve not been before. come along and get the hang of it before next Sunday. Please do make a special effort to come.

The Rosary mission has had a slower than hoped for start. We’ve given away just over 200 rosaries and had some wonderful conversations with people on the streets – but a lack of volunteers for keeping the church open has made things harder. Do please look at the rota and see what you can do to help.

The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children are holding a meeting with us on Wednesday at 7pm in the church hall. Find out how you can help save the lives of children in the UK. Leaflets with details at the front door.

    News

Thank you to everyone who has indicated to Anthony (in person or via music@parpri1.dreamhosters.com) that they are interested in joining the choir – either for the advent carol concert, the children’s choir or for the Anthem in October. There is now a physical sign up sheet at the front door – please put your details down so we can contact you about rehearsal times.

This week our pew sheet is a poster/flyer with all our exciting events between now and Christmas. Please do put it up in your window or share it with your friends and invite them!

I’m still looking for volunteers to help with the Rosary Mission (keeping the church open, providing tea & coffee etc) 10th – 24th October and to help run the Sunday School and start a new parent and toddler group. Please be in touch.

Wednesday is the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary and +Jonathan has invited us all to a mass at St. Andrew’s in Holborn. I’ll be attending and it would be lovely if a little gang of us could go. Let me know if you plan on going.
