    A Befitting Welcome

We have a huge welcome to celebrate when our new Vicar is Collated and inducted on the 17th of June at 7 pm here in St Anselm by Rt. Rev. Jonathan Baker, Bishop of Fulham. This is a massive occasion for all of us and the church. Although the time is short, we must do all we can to make him and his dear wife feel loved and welcomed. Romans 15:7 encourages us to welcome one another in these words: “Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”

We all have ways of expressing our welcome, and here at St. Anselm’s, we welcome people by sharing food, chatting, worshipping together and putting infectious smiles on our faces.

Once again, we will welcome a new Vicar, in the name of Fr. Stephen George Brown SSC. It would be great to say hello and introduce ourselves to him when we meet him; we could bring some food to share with him after the service.

You may present a gift or card to him, assure him of our support and above all, pray for him. This is a new period in the church’s life, and it must start with joy, love, smiles, and every support and help we can give. He will need a little time to settle in, and this is the period during which our

support and encouragement will be needed most.

By the grace of God, some parishioners have met him, and I must say he is a wonderful person to be with. I hope we will all remember him in our prayers for God to use him as a vessel to support the ministry in this loving parish of St. Anselm.

    Fr. Josiah

    A United Church

For almost a week running, most of our readings talked about loving one another as the Lord Jesus Christ loved us and Jesus praying to the Father that all may be one as the Son and the Father are one. This moves us to pause and ask why the emphasis is on loving one another and staying together as one whole body of Christ. Unity is very paramount in every organisation because it is the lifeblood, and so is it to the Church. A church that is not loving and united loses its relevance because that is the foundation of the Church. Divisions in the Church of God open the floodgate for the enemy to penetrate quickly and create confusion.

1 Corinthians 3:4-6 tells us how the early Church was divided into individuals rather than God, who gives growth and sustenance. “For when one says, ‘I belong to Paul’, and another, ‘I belong to Apollos’, are you not merely human? What, then, is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.”

The Church of God is not about individuals. It is about Christ Jesus, so when we focus on mortal beings, we miss the mark; instead, our focus must always be on Christ Jesus. We are all human beings striving for perfection through the grace of God. The body of Christ comprises different parts, and all the parts work together to achieve the great commission. There will be other opinions here and there, but that must not divide us; all the differences must help us make the right decisions and come out with lovely and heart-warming music like a symphony orchestra through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We are all on the same team headed by Jesus Christ, so we must remain in his love so that he will dwell in us. We all have a role to play; everyone is essential in Christ’s body. No role is small or more significant; we are all the same because our shared goal is to please our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

    St. Anselm Foodbank

St. Anselm Church operates a food bank, which has helped many individuals and families struggling to feed themselves to have access to food during the official opening hours or anytime the church is open. Independent foodbanks like St. Anselm foodbank number about 1,172, and Trussell Trust Foodbanks are around 1,400 in the United Kingdom.

The Department for Work and Pension (DWP) reported in 2023 that 3% of people in the UK used a food bank in 2022. This percentage is expected to rise, hence the importance we must attach to our food bank here in St. Anselm. An average of 20 individuals and families use St. Anselm’s food bank every Wednesday, apart from those who come in on other days.

What makes St. Anselm Food Bank easy to use is that we do not take vouchers to give out food. We give food to anyone who comes through the church doors needing it and offer people the opportunity to chat, have a cup of coffee, and socialize, which is very good for our mental health. You can use the St. Anselm food bank without a referral because we are a church, and this is a gift to the community of Hayes.

Our foodbank relies on donations from you, some community members, St. Edmund’s Foodbank in Yeading, and Nuffield Health, including cash donations from specific individuals. We are fortunate to have very dedicated volunteers who are always ready to help those who use the foodbank with love and smiles. For the foodbank to continue to serve the people in our community well, we will need your support and prayers.  “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger, and you invited me in.” (Matthew 25:35)

    Boys Brigade Volunteering

Research shows that the fact we volunteer and help others makes us happier! If you choose BB as the place to volunteer, that would make us very happy!

Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people.

HERE’S WHY SOME OF OUR EXISTING LEADERS VOLUNTEERED…

Many of our volunteers say they’ve learned things through their involvement with BB that have helped them to get new jobs or even change career. For example, as well as helping out in a local BB group, you might like to train as a Trainer and help run courses for other volunteers. Once you volunteer there’s a whole world of opportunities for you to participate in within our movement – locally, nationally or internationally.

Check out some of the most common questions asked…

    WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS DO?

There are lots of different ways that you can help. We work with boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all faiths, and with those with no faith. Most of our volunteers come along for a couple of hours a week in the evening and get involved with one or more of our four age sections:

Anchors, Juniors, Company, and Seniors. We need volunteers to help children with activities, games, sport, arts and crafts, hobbies, music etc. Whatever you can help with is greatly valued. We also want volunteers who will be able to relate to young people and over time, become adults they can trust and talk to.

I CAN’T HELP EVERY WEEK, DO YOU STILL WANT ME?

Yes! The beauty of volunteering with the BB is that you can be flexible, and if you can only help out once a month, or even once a year at the annual camp then we are happy to welcome you.

    WHAT IS THE AGE LIMIT?

You can volunteer from 14+ as a Young Leader, with a wider range of roles for those aged 18+. There’s no upper age limit. We really do welcome applications from all ages.

DO I NEED ANY PARTICULAR SKILLS?

No – just an attitude that is positive about children and young people, or as we say, have faith in young people. Of course, if you do have skills you can bring then fantastic! However, we value every volunteer just as we value every child and young person.

DO I HAVE TO BE CHRISTIAN?

Some local Churches require leaders to be members of that Church, whilst for others there is an expectation that leaders are in sympathy with the Christian basis of the BB and our Vision, Mission and Values. As an organisation we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and cultures.

    Singing In Unison

It is always joyful to come together as a church and sing hymns at the same pitch or, if you like, in unison. Most of us sing in our homes when we are with family and friends and sometimes when we are alone. When we pray, we sometimes sing to uplift our spirits.

Most of the time, singing in public is seen as the job of the professionals, but when we meet as a church, we all sing together, even when we have professionals leading. We currently do not have professional singers leading in the singing during worship; nevertheless, we have been blessed with individuals who have beautiful voices, which we all enjoy whenever we sing together in Church.

On page 43 of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book, “Life Together”, he asks the question, “Why do Christians sing when they are together?” and the answer is inspiring: “The reason is, quite simply, because in singing together it is possible for them to speak and pray the same Word at the same time; in other words, because here they can unite in the Word.” Singing together unites us in worship and prayer, making us stay focused and devoid of interruptions.

A church that sings together is always edified because the presence of God is continuously manifested when we sing praises and hymns to him. In Ephesians 5:19, we are told, “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,”. Let us all sing together and praise the name of the LORD with all our hearts and voices.

    A New Chapter

We are moving into a new chapter in the life of St Anselm’s Church, where a new vicar will be appointed to replace our current vacancy. It is a period of reflection and prayer for the parish and the new Vicar to be appointed. You may ask why a replacement should not be made now. We must know that we go through an interregnum, which simply means ‘vacancy between leaders’. It is so because there should always be a gap, which is excellent for planning, prayer, reflection, and preparation before a new appointment is made. Currently, the PCC will be very busy having mandatory meetings to set the ball rolling for the appointment. One thing is obvious: the process can only begin when the current Vicar has left.

At this point in the life of St. Anselm, we should do so because change is a part of human life. Sometimes, it brings a lot of anxiety, mixed feelings, and even fear. We must not allow the change that may come to St. Anselm to scare us, but know that God brings this change to bring personal and holistic development, new opportunities, growth, and increase in our ability to adapt, learn new things, and helps us become united more than ever. We must be ready to embrace the new things that God will bring to us. Jennifer Lynn Hatmaker, an American writer, puts it this way, “God does not change, but He uses change – to change us. He sends us on journeys that bring us to the end of ourselves. We often feel out of control, yet if we embrace His leading, we may find ourselves on the ride of our lives.” Let us wait patiently on the Lord; let us be still and know that He is God.

    Thank You and Goodbye

This Sunday will be our last with you. We’ve already moved out of the vicarage and are surrounded by boxes in Devon. It is absolute chaos wherever I look. Each time I empty a box things get worse and I can’t see how we’re ever going to actually get the house square.

I often feel like this as we start Holy Week. There is so much to organise, so much to do. Flowers, candles, liturgies, baptisms… if I’m not careful I can very quickly start to feel overwhelmed. There is simply too much to handle, too much to do!

But then, as I sit in prayer before the blessed sacrament (as I did yesterday at the Chrism Mass) I am lifted out of chaos and reminded that all of this is for God – and in particular for my relationship with Him.

It’s important that we keep hold of that understanding as things change and shift around us. We get used to how things are, the general plodding on of life – so when things change or things get busy we can immediately be frightened or worried or angry. It is in those moments we need to most clearly reach of God and for that calm that only He can bring.

Over the coming months there will be much change at St. Anselm as you look to find a new Vicar. Things many not be as they were before, but that is okay because we KNOW that God is in all of this and He will show us the way.

So now I sit here, surrounded by chaos and change, not frightened, not worried, not angry – but content – content that no matter what happens with all these boxes(!) – God will make His way known and all will be well.

The same is true for all of you at St. Anselm and in the wider Hayes community. God will make His way known and all will be well.

Thank you for your love, your prayers and your support over the last four years. We love you all very dearly.

    Fr. Matthew, Catherine & Edmund

    Holy Week

Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday are essential periods in the ecclesiastical calendar that we all look forward to. We have been fasting for some weeks with sober reflections, acts of penance, prayers, and almsgiving.

Palm Sunday is with us now, where the triumphal entry of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is re-enacted through the procession of palms. This event is recorded in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. People waving palm branches and shouting ‘hoshi’ana’ (Save Please) as Jesus enters Jerusalem. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord is the first day of Holy Week, and it teaches us how important it is for all of us to welcome Jesus into our lives and always follow him.

Maundy Thursday, also called Holy Thursday and other names, is when Jesus Christ washed his disciples’ feet and the institution of the Holy Eucharist, also called the Last Supper. This is a significant day in the life of the church. The Latin word ‘mandatum’ means commandment because, on this day, Jesus said to his disciples in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”

Maundy Thursday is followed by Good Friday, the day our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and died for all our sins. This day is a very solemn day and momentous day for all Christians because since Jesus was crucified, the message of the cross has been propagated throughout the world. The cross signifies man’s salvation, and it is only through it that hope is assured.

Holy Saturday is also known as Great Saturday; this is the day that the Paschal Lamb is blessed, the day of lights, and the day that the Gloria we have missed for some time is sung with bells tolling. This is the last day of the Holy Week. On this day, we wait for the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Easter vigil service is celebrated. The vigil leads us to the climax, where Jesus Christ’s resurrection occurs.

This Easter will be unique as we thank God for the ministry of Fr. Matthew Cashmore, Catherine, and Edmund. They continue with the work of God in a new parish.

    Easter Garden

In the notices, we will realize that on the 24th of March (Palm Sunday), all the young people in St. Anselm and Sunday School teachers will work together to build the Easter Garden for us immediately after mass. It is important to note that last year, it was so exciting to see them share ideas to make the Garden beautiful, with interesting creative ideas coming from everyone. When we try to present the resurrection scene with kids, it becomes a privilege and an opportunity for them to be innovative and to picture the resurrection scene, which will linger in their minds for a long time.

If you do not know what the Easter Garden is about, I will encourage you to join them after mass on Palm Sunday. I bet there will be a lot to learn from them. Making the Easter Garden, apart from being exciting, is a Christian tradition that allows us to depict and retell the Easter story creatively. You may wonder what you will see at the Easter Garden. The Easter Garden always have the tomb, hill, cross, rock and all the wonderful flowers and grass that make it so beautiful and full of life.

A reflection on the Easter Garden brings a lot of scenes together and moves us to meditate on the start of the passion through Holy Week and, ultimately, the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Easter Garden is about hope and encouragement that even if things become complex or challenging, Jesus Christ will come to rescue us. It is a call to all of us to encourage all the kids to see this as an avenue to do the little they can for the church of God.
